Dont be afraid to change!!!

With the heat of summer baring down, it is a great time to take advantage of the worm nature aggressiveness and predatory instinct of the Large Mouth Bass. With water tempters in North Texas ranging form the mid to upper 80's this only means one thing, the bass are in high gear during prine times. There are a number of things that I like to turn to in this type climate. I would have to say that my favort would have to be the morning and afternoon top water bite. there are three main top water baits I make sure I keep in my summer bass tackle, the first being the popper. From open water structor to shallow banks, the popper is a great tool to appeal to the predatory instinct of an hungry bass. The loud water moving presentation of this bait, when worked correctly, leads the lunkers to believe that there are wounded bait fish on the menu. If you find your self looking for something with a faster retrieve with out losing the noise of the popper, I would suggest trying a buzz bait. The speedy presentation of a buzz bait allows to cover more water in a shorter amount of time, for those times when covering a large area with spread out cover such as weed lines or hanging tree cover just to name a few. This is a great locater bait on hot sunny days, when the fish are holding closest to the structure and more reluctant to move it gives you the ability to make multiple cast over the same area while staying on the move.

As the summer roles on and the water levels began to drop and the mats and lillie's appear. This is when the frog does its thing, I guess you can say its the specialist of top water fishing. If its an explosive bite you want nothing beats the frog. During middle to late summer in Texas, the banks of any lake, river, or pond is going to be teaming with frogs of all sizes and the big bass love this. There are several types of frogs baits out there, for me its a must that it floats and has realistic legs. There nothing like making a long cast to the top of a grass mat or in the middle of a lilly patch and the water just explodes, if that doesn't get the juices flowing than nothing will!!! The top water presentation is no doubt a great way to work banks and structure during the morning and after noon bites for some hart pumping action, but once the sun is at high noon and the bite slows, so should you....

Worms, Flukes, and Craws. Those are three of my go to bass baits when things get hot. When june hits and the water temp gets to be around 70 to 80, lots of the time if I go to my favoret spotin the morrning or late afternoon, theres a good chance im going to have to share the water and the fish with a number of other anglers. Some think bass dont bite in the middle of the day, some just simply dont want to brave the heat, I can understand that, but I'll let you in on somthing, they do bite in the middle of the day sometimes all day. While your sitting on the couch watching fishing, im standing on the bank of some lake throwing a cream worm carallina rigged with a foot and a half 10lb leader, looking for the big bite. Not only do i have the lake to myself but there biten. Deppending on the visuall structor, remmember people we are fish from the banke no fancie duhikies to show me the coture of the bottom, but with a good pair of polarized glasses you can spot stuture almost as good. As I was saying, deppending on visabal structor, for instince, the lake I fished last week was about 70% grasses 30% sand and rocks. I tend to go with soft plastics with light wight to attract bass during a hot summer day.

Line choce and leader leigth is realy based on the conditions, but 12lb test and a 10 lb leader works for me. With the light setup I can feel the bottom and any interested fish checking out my bait. With this rig, you can use a number of soft plastics, worms, craws, or creaturs. I throw a 7in worm of any color or style, you should use what works for you. This is not a serch technique like the fluke or soft swim bait, but I know if these fish don't respond to the worm, I would need to make a change and find the active fish with the fluke or swim bait. If the fish are not in there normal haunts I'll find them with the serch baits and after i do so then ill swich to the worm and pick up the not so active fish wich in some cases are bigger and more abundent. When using a fluke or a bass assasin stiyle baite. I paire them with a wide shanked jig head and use a slow retreve with a slite jerk of the line every now and then to intice them to hit. Try different retreves intill you find what the fish want. I catch a lot of fish useing theas tequneccs. I hope some of this info will help you the next time your on the water. remember use sunskrean and continue to get your line wet @ urbansportfishing.net.
